West Sonoma County High School Teacher of the Year Award
We have been recognizing outstanding High School Teachers since 2007 with $1000 cash awards and a luncheon banquet in their honor. Students, parents, alumni, community members, and colleagues are invited to submit nominations.
The Sebastopol Rotary Education Foundation (SREF) has honored Andy DelMonte, Analy High School teacher of Music, English and Physical Education and John Thomas, El Molino High School teacher of English. As “West Sonoma County High School 2012-2013 Teachers of the Year.” DelMonte and Thomas were recognized at a Rotary Club of Sebastopol luncheon on Friday, May 24. Each received a plaque and a $1000 award from the Sebastopol Rotary Education Foundation.
Andy earned his Bachelor's degree in Music of Choral Education from Arizona State University, and his Masters' degree in Music Education from Boston University. His is completing his sixteenth year as choral director at Analy High school, and has taught classes at Santa Rosa Junior College for three years. DelMonte has taken the Analy choirs to perform across California and across the United States. In letters attesting to his positive impact as a teacher, DelMonte’s students offered, "Mr. D truly cares. He goes out of his way to make sure that each of his students knows that he supports them and is there for them whenever they need him. He has more faith in us than any teacher I have met. Mr. D makes me want to achieve great things – and he does it all with a smile.”
John earned a Bachelor's degree at UC Berkeley, where he also played football and baseball. Thomas has taught English at El Molino for over 25 years, and has coached baseball, softball, football, basketball, and golf. Mr. Thomas’ nominators describe him as a teacher who demonstrates, “integrity, dedication, strong values, and a passion for teaching.” A colleague wrote, “Mr. Thomas is the epitome of a Teacher of the Year because everything he does is done with unparalleled effort and enthusiasm.” A student shared, “It is not OK with Mr. Thomas if students do not do their best.” A nomination from a parent stated, “I am grateful to Mr. Thomas’ profound dedication to his craft and to his students. His influence and inspiration will continue to have impact long after his students graduate.”
